Has ‘workforce-as-a-service’ arrived?July 14, 2015
First came software-as-a-service (SaaS). Now, is it time for workforce-as-a-service (WaaS)? Not unlike the underlying concept behind SaaS, WaaS simply means that businesses can use their employees/workers as needed. Employers can scale their workforce up or down to match business ebbs and flows. According to Diego Lomanto, vice president of marketing at Work Market, which provides an online marketplace for businesses to manage freelancers, contractors, and consultants, WaaS allows employers to better match supply with demand. For organizations that depend on quick, reliable customer service, WaaS may have distinct advantages.
“Speed is essential to the modern field services organization, and an on-demand workforce can help enterprises quickly overcome the challenges inherent in a hyper-responsive service world,” explains Lomanto.Read More »

Tailoring Your Workforce to Your BudgetJune 4, 2015
The last several years have seen the emergence of Workforce-as-a-Service, or WaaS, an acronym that could soon become as familiar as SaaS (Software-asa- Service, otherwise known as the Cloud), IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service), and other internet-enabled services. Leveraging a growing pool of talent largely fed by unemployment and under-employment, driven in no small part by the ongoing economic pressures on businesses to manage labor costs, this new service manifests itself in a number of ways in the AV and IT market sectors.
Work Market, which found early success in the AV vertical when it was founded five years ago, goes a step further than other platforms, according to Diego Lomanto, the company’s VP of marketing. Specifically, Work Market’s platform handles many of the complexities associated with hiring and managing freelancers, such as the paperwork and communications, which can be cumbersome for smaller firms. “We have built an end-to-end workflow for engaging with contractors, so you can make working with contractors a core component of your business model,” he said.Read More »
Service Provider Dilemma: How to Manage Contractors EfficientlyMay 22, 2015
Research shows that contract workers are on the rise as companies are finding it is more expensive to hire full-time employees, and workers themselves are preferring to be freelancers instead of committing to a single organization. However, efficiently managing contractors has become a challenge for service providers. Keeping track of their project status, hours worked, skill sets, tasks completed and their availability is a daunting task. It can be time-consuming and inefficient, which for any business means lost profits. Therefore, it is critical that service providers get a good handle on their contractors and manage them better.
It is “The Perfect Storm,” according to Diego Lomanto, vice president of Marketing at Work Market, a provider of a cloud-based freelance management system (FMS) that helps service providers and other businesses manage their independent contractor and freelance workforce.Read More »

The ‘Gig Economy': An App-based Spin on an Old IdeaMay 14, 2015
The app-based approach to doing things has become particularly popular among those seeking work as well as workers. Certain employment apps focus on finding someone to perform temporary jobs such as helping you to get organized, painting your house or even driving you to the airport. The multitude of workers and employers connecting via apps to fill such short-term jobs make up what has been dubbed the “gig economy.”
How is the gig economy changing the worker-employee relationship, and what are some key trends that are emerging as a result of this new way of sourcing workers? “It’s optimizing the experience on both ends. The worker gains the potential to control their own destiny, setting their own price, selecting the assignments that add value to their career development, and striking a work/life balance that suits them.” says Diego Lomanto, VP of Marketing at Work Market.Read More »

With respect to staffing, the questions we should all be asking are: “How is software or information and communication technology (ICT) eating staffing?” “How fast is it eating staffing?” “And, finally, what does it mean to me?” Fortunately, many of the businesses in the staffing supply chain comprehend the inevitability of what lies ahead, are asking these questions, and are forming positions and moving forward.

Hiring On-DemandMay 5, 2015
As the contingent labor market expands, the types and classifications of part-time workers continues to evolve as well. Organizations have finally realized the benefits of a contingent workforce—flexibility, scalability, and access to key skills—and are beginning to rethink their strategy. One specific area experiencing a big growth spike is independent contractors (IC). Also known as freelancers, these on-demand workers deliver specific needs and skills for organizations looking to tackle a project or initiative.
Is an on-demand workforce the wave of the future? It certainly seems that organizations of all sizes will at least look at how independent workers could impact their business strategy. “When the walls come down on open labor, the effect of on-demand talent is going to be profound,” says Stephen DeWitt, CEO of Work Market.Read More »

From the Job Market to the Work Market: A World of Work in TransitionApril 8, 2015
The world of work is changing in dramatic ways. Thanks to increasing media coverage and our own everyday experiences in our roles as workers and consumers, we know that it is so. In today’s advanced, market-driven economy, it is broadly understood and accepted that platform technology is being continuously adopted to deliver more efficiency (sometimes now referred to as “sharing or “collaborative consumption”) and reduced cycle or response times (sometimes now referred to as “on-demand.”) Now it is also becoming apparent this has not only been occurring in areas such as retail and travel, it has also been occurring (perhaps less visibly) in labor markets and the world of work.
A very fundamental shift has begun in the economy from a “job market” to a “work market.” Increasingly, for businesses (seeking much greater structural labor flexibility and cost efficiency) and for a growing–often skilled and specialized–segment of the workforce (seeking free agency as “businesses of one”), work is being arranged less to fill a fixed position or job and more to perform a specific kind of work in a project-specific context to achieves specific results. Technology-enabled platforms are critical in driving this monumental shift.

On-Demand Talent and the Rise of Work Market and the FMS PlatformFebruary 26, 2015
A question remains deep in the discussion of on-demand talent: how can companies leverage both the positive aspects of this new, flexible workforce while also maintaining some measure of control and compliance? While standardization and robust capabilities may help to alleviate the challenges of today’s on-demand talent world, automation is often a critical cog in addressing this new normal. New tech companies say freelancing is the future of workFebruary 3, 2015
More and more, companies are shifting portions of their work to independent contractors, managing large pools of people available as needed for anything from tech support to landscaping. This relieves them of having to pay employees a fixed amount every month — not to mention health insurance, Social Security taxes or workers’ compensation.
It’s difficult to know how many companies are going in this direction, or how quickly. The number of self-employed people as a percentage of the workforce has remained fairly constant for decades, at about 10 percent; much of the contracting out that has occurred is to firms that have employees, rather than sole proprietors.
Regardless, a lot of money is going into start-ups that are competing to ease the transition — and profit from it. Take Work Market, a platform where Wooldridge finds most of his jobs. It just raised $20 million more from leading investors, including Union Square Ventures principal Fred Wilson, who thinks it has the potential to “transform the way enterprises leverage the on-demand labor economy.”Read More »

Lowe’s Case Highlights Worker Misclassification LessonsJanuary 20, 2015
Misclassification of workers continues to be a headache for employers, with a judge recently approving a $6.5 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by home improvement contractors against Lowe’s Home Centers. The Lowe’s settlement highlights some “key lessons every business should consider when working with an independent contractor,” according to the founders of Work Market, which provides freelancer management solutions to companies.
Among other things, Jeff Wald and Jeffrey Leventhal said in a post on Forbes.com, working with a business entity such as an LLC “does not automatically eliminate your misclassification exposure.” The Lowe’s plaintiffs included installation contractors who operated in the form of a business entity.
The post also notes that the largest, most prosperous businesses “are just as susceptible to labor violations as their small and mid-size counterparts” and independent workers “are playing a critical role in the growth of some of today’s biggest brands.”
“Fines levied by the IRS and State Labor Departments for worker misclassification can exceed millions, if not tens of millions of dollars, depending on the severity of the infractions,” Wald and Leventhal said. “The threat of class-action lawsuits … should also serve as a further deterrent for companies straddling the boundaries of improper classification.”

The Internet and the End of ‘Things’October 17, 2014
The “Internet of Things” is everyone’s new favorite buzzword. This increasing interconnectedness (is that a word?) will lead to the end of various “things” that at one time were commonplace. In the next twenty years we will see the virtual disappearance of many everyday physical items, including books (more ebooks will be sold in the US next year than paper books), paper currency and most single-use consumer electronic (does anyone even need an alarm clock anymore?).
Like the remote control (yes, there is an app for that) and business cards (how are these still a thing?), there are many physical items in our lives that will disappear in the year to come. The three soon-to-be obsolete things that I want to focus on are the key, the mail, and physical crime.

3 Things HR Professionals Should Know About the Evolving Freelance EconomySeptember 4, 2014
“The HR industry is all abuzz about the freelance economy. Pundits are speculating about general workforce implications, marketers are hashtag happy, and analysts are busy predicting just how big the boom will get. HR professionals, on the other hand, are a little less concerned about the hype and slightly more preoccupied with how they can adapt to this massive industry transformation.
To date, many HR professionals have taken more of a hands-off approach when it comes to managing their freelancers — leaving the process largely in the hands of hiring managers and procurement. With the volume of freelancers expected to explode in the coming years, the status quo will no longer be sufficient. Simply put, HR needs to become more involved.”Read More »
