    “The companies individually and as a whole provide people with a better understanding of all the ingredients it takes to create and run a successful startup company,” Accelerate executive director Mark Lesko said.

  • New tech companies say freelancing is the future of work

    More and more, companies are shifting portions of their work to independent contractors, managing large pools of people available as needed for anything from tech support to landscaping. This relieves them of having to pay employees a fixed amount every month — not to mention health insurance, Social Security taxes or workers’ compensation.

    It’s difficult to know how many companies are going in this direction, or how quickly. The number of self-employed people as a percentage of the workforce has remained fairly constant for decades, at about 10 percent; much of the contracting out that has occurred is to firms that have employees, rather than sole proprietors.

    Regardless, a lot of money is going into start-ups that are competing to ease the transition — and profit from it. Take Work Market, a platform where Wooldridge finds most of his jobs. It just raised $20 million more from leading investors, including Union Square Ventures principal Fred Wilson, who thinks it has the potential to “transform the way enterprises leverage the on-demand labor economy.”

  • Fred Wilson follows his own lead, invests even more in Work Market

    Union Square Ventures founder Fred Wilson started January by promising a big year for corporate software startups. Three weeks later, he’s following through on that promise. Wilson’s firm has led a $20 million Series C infusion into Work Market, a maker of a cloud platform used by large companies to recruit and manage all their freelancer and independent contractors.

    Union Square, among the five-year-old company’s earliest investors, was joined by Spark Capital, SoftBank Capital, Industry Ventures and Silicon Valley Bank.

    “Union Square Ventures invests in pioneering companies that show the potential to truly disrupt the status quo,” said Wilson, who sits on the company’s board. “We see tremendous opportunity for Work Market to transform the way enterprises leverage the on-demand labor economy.”

    It’s the second big news for Work Market in about a week. On Jan. 13, the company appointed former Cobalt Networks CEO and Hewlett-Packard exec Stephen DeWitt to become its first non-founder CEO, replacing co-founder Jeff Leventhal, who remains on the board.

  • Lowe’s Case Highlights Worker Misclassification Lessons

    Misclassification of workers continues to be a headache for employers, with a judge recently approving a $6.5 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by home improvement contractors against Lowe’s Home Centers. The Lowe’s settlement highlights some “key lessons every business should consider when working with an independent contractor,” according to the founders of Work Market, which provides freelancer management solutions to companies.

    Among other things, Jeff Wald and Jeffrey Leventhal said in a post on, working with a business entity such as an LLC “does not automatically eliminate your misclassification exposure.” The Lowe’s plaintiffs included installation contractors who operated in the form of a business entity.

    The post also notes that the largest, most prosperous businesses “are just as susceptible to labor violations as their small and mid-size counterparts” and independent workers “are playing a critical role in the growth of some of today’s biggest brands.”

    “Fines levied by the IRS and State Labor Departments for worker misclassification can exceed millions, if not tens of millions of dollars, depending on the severity of the infractions,” Wald and Leventhal said. “The threat of class-action lawsuits … should also serve as a further deterrent for companies straddling the boundaries of improper classification.”
